GROUP REFLECTION

Facebook Group Reflection

As part of assessment for one of my course units Emerging Technologies, I joined a group related to my interest on facebook even though i already had a facebook account before now but participating in a group discusion on this social network was my first experience.

I joined the groups "ICT", "ICT Student group", "Hope of Africa" and the group "Want to Become the President of Nigeria". i would express my feelings and observations for each of the groups joined under two subheadings below; ICT AND Politics.

ICT

I joined this group because i am interested in the use of ICT in and outside the classroom> i am curious about the use of ICT in other countries of the world. I joined the ict group in South Africa and Ireland, made some contributions and followed discussions for a few days but it was unfortunate that these groups have not been very active because i got no reply to all my contributions so far.

Politics

I was more than excited to find and share ideas and beliefs with this group of people who have genuine concerns about the future of our country and Africa as a whole. I strongly believe in my generation as a revolution of change for my country .

The discussions that had gone on before my joining this group was about the youth as the of a new Nigeria and Africa as a nation and about the issue of corruption that has so pervaded Nigeria. I was happy when i got a reply to my contribution by one of the group members. I disscussed corruption, Corruption is everywhere and not only limited to Nigeria and Nigerians shouldd endeavour to promote good sides of the nation and stop celebrating its negatives all the time. We have Nigerians all over the world who are making us proud, example are Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as the former vice president and managing director of World Bank and Prof. Obi Ezekwesili etc These are Nigerians, honest, transparrent and incoruptible as they are, they are to be proud of and indeed they are my mentors. Nigeria is not afterall corrupt as it is been promoted.

Joining a group on facebook had made me realise how facebook could actually be more than a site for connecting and chatting with friends but serve as well as an educational platform and also a socio-political terrain to harness ideas, information, resources to form a formidable force whose product could benefit the nation as a whole.

Using facebook as a learning network could have been more effective and impacting if discussions could be kept more alive and active!
